Leash & Reactivity Training
Pulling. Lunging. Barking. Walks that feel stressful instead of calm.
This is one of the most frustrating situations for dog owners.
At Pup’s & Paws Dog Training, we turn chaotic walks into structured, controlled experiences—so you can actually enjoy being outside with your dog.

What We Help You Fix
Most leash and reactivity issues are not random — they come from lack of structure, overexcitement, fear, or your dog not knowing how to respond in those moments.
✔ Pulling and dragging you on walks
✔ Lunging at dogs, people, or movement
✔ Barking and overreacting outside
✔ Fixating or locking onto triggers
✔ Overexcitement around dogs or people
✔ Fearful or nervous reactions
✔ Ignoring commands outside
✔ No focus or engagement on walks
✔ Inconsistent behavior in different environments
✔ Difficulty staying calm in public
We build clarity and structure so your dog knows exactly how to stay calm and focused.

Leash and Reactivity Training Designed for Real Results
Reactivity looks different in every dog.
Some dogs bark and lunge out of excitement.
Some react because they feel unsure or overwhelmed.
Others get frustrated when they can’t reach what they want.
We don’t treat all dogs the same.
Through structured, in-home training and controlled real-world exposure, we teach your dog how to stay calm, focused, and responsive—no matter the environment.
Loose Leash Walking
Your dog walks calmly next to you without pulling, so you can enjoy walks instead of constantly correcting or being dragged.
Heel Command
Your dog stays in position next to you when needed, giving you control in busy areas like sidewalks, parks, or crowded spaces.
Eye Contact & Focus
Your dog checks in with you instead of fixating on everything around them, making it easier to guide them through distractions.
Impulse Control
Your dog learns to pause and think instead of reacting immediately, which creates calmer behavior around dogs, people, and movement.
Neutral Behavior Around Dogs
Your dog can exist around other dogs without lunging, barking, or overreacting, allowing for calm and controlled outings.
Calm Behavior Around People
Your dog stays composed around strangers, kids, and crowds instead of jumping, pulling, or becoming overwhelmed.
Distraction Training
Your dog learns to stay focused even with real-life distractions like squirrels, bikes, or busy environments.
Sit, Stay & Place in Public
Your dog can settle and hold position, whether you’re at a park, watching a game, or sitting at a restaurant.
Structured Walks in Real Environments
Your dog learns how to move through the world calmly with you—whether it’s a quiet street, a local park, or a busy public setting.
What Our Clients Are Saying
Leash and Reactivity Training FAQ
Where does training take place?
Training starts in your home to build clear communication and focus.
Once your dog is ready, we move into real-life environments like public parks, dog-friendly stores, and downtown areas. This allows your dog to practice around people, dogs, kids, and wildlife in a controlled way.
When can training start?
Training can start once your dog is fully vaccinated, as sessions will include public environments.
If you’re looking to start earlier, check out our puppy training program.
Do you train all dogs?
We work with all breeds, sizes, and ages.
Do you work with aggressive dogs?
We do not train dogs with a bite history or dogs that are a safety risk.
Reactivity can sometimes look similar to aggression, and it’s not always easy to tell. If you’re unsure, we can assess your dog together.
If your dog is clearly aggressive, we will guide you to a trainer who specializes in that level of behavior.
What methods do you use?
We use positive reinforcement methods tailored to your dog.
This includes treats, praise, toys, and touch—whatever motivates your dog to learn and stay engaged.
What tools do you use?
We typically use a standard collar, leash, and treats.
If additional tools are needed, we will determine that during your dog’s evaluation and explain everything clearly.
Do you use prong or shock collars?
We do not use shock collars and have never used them.
In some cases, a prong collar may be introduced for large, strong dogs where safety is a concern.
This is only done after explaining it in detail, getting your approval, and trying other options first.
The goal is never to punish your dog, but to give you better control and prevent unsafe situations.
If used, we actively work toward reducing reliance on it over time.
How long are training sessions?
Each session is about 1 hour and focused on your dog, your environment, and your goals.
What does Leash and Reactivity training include?
Training includes leash skills, focus, impulse control, commands like sit, stay, place, structured walking, and working through real-life distractions.
What areas do you serve?
We provide dog training in Suwanee, Buford, Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Duluth, Lawrenceville, Sugar Hill, and surrounding Gwinnett County areas.
What do I need for training?
Please have treats ready, a leash, and a collar or harness.
We will guide you on anything else if needed.
Will I be part of the training?
Yes. You will learn exactly how to handle your dog so the results carry over into your daily walks and routines.
How quickly will I see progress?
You will see progress in every session as your dog starts to understand what is expected.
Many clients notice a big difference within 5–10 sessions, especially with consistent practice between sessions.
Some dogs improve very quickly, even after the first session.
Leash and reactivity training does require consistency, but we break everything down into simple, clear steps so you’re never overwhelmed.
